She feels that the lien was filed on her simply because she was an officer in the company and still lives in the general area. “They’re just looking for warm bodies,” she said. “I was not the treasurer; I was not the bookkeeper.” „. “I signed checks made out to the IRS that were used to accompany other people’s tax returns,” she said. “A number of us signed them. It never occurred to me to question backup for checks made payable to the IRS. All I had was canceled checks to the IRS. I couldn’t prove anything. It was my failure not to see that our account number was not listed on these checks.”
She said the IRS is not pushing the case and is content to leave the lien out there. She said she cannot afford to pay off the lien and does not feel it is her responsibility to do so.
“I have paid all my taxes since I first stepped foot in this country,” she said. Of the lien, “It’s one of the things you know is out there, and you try to put it out of your mind because you can’t do anything about it,” she said.
“It has taught me to cross all the T8 and dot all the I’s. I never send out a check without some identification of what the check is for, and I make a photocopy. I keep meticulous records of what are and are not my responsibilities, and I have done so since 1983 when that fell on my head,” she said.
She said she was running for treasurer in the same spirit that she has volunteered for many projects in town. She noted that the treasurer’s position requires more hours than any other town office. “I volunteered because of the pleasure of living in this town,” she said. “I really like it.”
