Town resident Skip Giles said, “The number of 35 probably came up because of the drainfield. I do not like the idea of drinking in the building. Things can get out of hand.”
Mrs. Day noted, “Since the alcohol business makes people nervous, maybe you should not sell it.”
Mayor Morehouse responded, “I think it will be a sticky, thorny issue, decided on a case by case basis.”
Mrs. Smith said, “I think having the option of someone else to clean the building is a good idea.”
Diane Bruce, a town resident, spoke to the members of the council. “Our committee did not make a significant change. The original suggestion was a maximum of 80 people, and we changed it to 35. We did not change the fee schedule, but we changed the security deposit to $50. We reduced the advance booking to six months. We suggested that alcoholic beverages be prohibited. I asked my neighbors to come to the meeting about this. There are very few residential sections of town any longer. I believe you also realized there was concern. Since the last meeting we have heard other concerns. Once people find there is a building to be used, it might become heavily used, such as the rec center. I am still concerned about the parking, septic and deterioration of the building. It was not a problem when the library had events here.”
Mayor Morehouse responded, “When we purchased the building for $150,000, one of the primary issues was to protect the exterior of the building. The Town Hall is a meeting space by definition and we do not want it used just one night a month. We own the building and we have to be good stewards. I do not think it will get out of hand.”
Council member Newbill Miller added, “The Town Hall should be used for the community and town, and I think we should adopt a policy that will be compatible for both uses. This will be a better policy as a result of the discussion tonight. The library was here for 20 years, and its uses were grandfathered. We need to remember that this is a residential neighborhood.” !
