Laurie Marshall’s portrait show supports the old adage that an artist paints a portrait not only of her subject but of herself as well.
Laurie Marshall’s presence fills these rooms as much as her sitters do. Her genuine love for and interest in these people and for Rappahannock County is self-evident in the care and attention paid to the painting and presentation of these works.
“River Children” a delightful portrayal of three children playing in a stream is framed with fish salamanders and crayfish circling the painting. Mythili Nakkisan the subject in “Resurrection Door” is surrouned by imagery from her life, water falls from her native India, baskets of fruit and even flames, the cause of her untimely death.
The provocative titles of and imagery in her work give us tantilizing hints of a strong underlying spititual current in her life and work. Her father crouches down with extended hands by a glowing river in “Return
