Recycling Program. Her subject was Recycling and Conservation, and, as she says, recycling is conservation as keeping things out of landfills is conservation. Most of those present did not realize that the local phone book lists number that can be called for recycling information.
By 1995, the State has mandated that 25 percent of trash must be recycled. There are five R’s to follow: Reduce-eg. less plastic is being used in bottles and when disposing of them, flatten them; Reuse-eg. sharing magazines; Reject-eg. don’t but if too much packaging material used; Respond-eg. call a company complaining or complimenting; and, of course, the fifth, Recycle. She urged those whose counties were not doing much in recycling to get involved.
The Registrar, Mrs. Dale Metzinger, welcomed a new member and reported that the papers of three others were being processed for acceptance. Mrs. Walter Clark who is the Flag Committee Chairman reported that she had presented an American flag which had flown over the Capitol to a Brownie troop in Madison.
