sponding appropriately to misbehavior and logical consequences of misbehavior.

By having 100 percent of the staff attend the same workship and have a common language and vocabulary in behavior management and an underlying philosophy based upon mutual respect, every adult would begin to accept the responsibility of being models for all of our students.

After this training, I suggest that a very specific list of do’s and don’t’s be developed, signed off on by each staff person, and remain in their file. These might include:

1. “Shut up” will not be used under any circumstances.

2. “Stupid,” “idiot,” “jerk” and other derogatory names or nicknames will not be used.

3. Children are not to be dealt with in anger, but only after a cooling-off period. Dealing with rude and disrespectful children is a daily occurence for teachers, and it is a challenge to not respond in kind.

4. Staff is not allowed to use their bodies in a physically intimidating manner toward children (poking, pushing, pulling, jerking, etc.) Touch is to used only in a positive manner (pat on the back, hug, handshake, handhold).

5. Sarcasm is not to be used with children.

6. Children are to be spoken to in a respectful tone of voice.

7. Disciplinary action will be a logical consequence of behavior
