Having the Good Citizen of the Week sit as the Judge reinforces the import we place on people exhibiting strong moral character. Having a jury of peers is yet another way to empower our children to learn how to behave responsibly as stellar citizens in our community. We recognize that many children do have selfdiscipline, are interested in being fair, and are good listeners. The power our young students will feel as they participate in this process will be a wonderful motivator for them to exhibit good moral behavior.
In‘Conclusion, I think there are many ways that we can “teach” character virtues in the public school, but I am opposed to a specific “Character Virtues Class” that would have a set curriculum, tests at the end of each unit, and them probably a standardized test at the end of the year.
I am adamantly opposed to anything like that. I do feel that by modeling respectiful behavior to and for all of our children-including the rudest and most challenging childrenand rewarding our model students in public assemblies as well as allowing them to participate in a court system of their peers, we can SHOW our children how we behave at Rappahannock Public Schools. We don’t just tell them what we expect-we SHOW them everyday, in every way, without exception.
