these assemblies need be nothing more than applause and a handshake as their names are called out in the public assembly, I don’t hink that weekly certificates are necessary.:
These assemblies could also be used as a forum for students concerns to be voiced and addressed in a formalized and socially acceptable manner. There could be a procedure for getting on the agenda of the grade level assemblies. It could also be an opportunity for teachers to voice some concerns and ask for student input in some creative problemsolving. After several months of such assemblies, perhaps chairing these assemblies could be turned over to class officers.
These assemblies could then be used to reinforce appropriate behavior in public functions by allowing a grade-level, freeplay time to follow for thirty minutes. All children who exhibited respectiful behavior during the assembly would be able to join the others outside for some wellearned free-time. Children who were rude and disrespectful would go back to their classroom to tvdrk on an assignment. This would begin our program of recognizing and awarding character virtues.
Another way to reward character virtue and strong morals would be to institute a court system at e$ch grade level. The sytem could be as complex as the grade level of the children would allow. Court could be
