The RCHS softball team won a majority of their games last week.
On Apnl 12, the girls defeated Stonewall Jackson by a wide margin, 16-2. Janet Hitt, Cyndi Welch, Marsha Freeman and Leah Marlett each had three hits. Pitcher Amy Payne allowed only five hits the entire game.
Cist Thursday they beat Page County, 6-6. Pitcher Amy Payne struck out five hitters and allowed only three hits. Leah Marlett had a double with two RBI’s.
The girls put up a good fight, but. lost to Brentsville last Friday, 10-7. RCHS was up 7-1 at the end of the fifth inning, but Brentsville scored nine runs in the sixth inning. Coach Renee Leake said, "Laura McNear played excellent defense, probably her best game ever.”
Marsha Freeman had a triple, Bonnie Jewell, Cyndi Welch and Kari Kerr had two hits each, and Kylene Wolf hit a single for two RBI’s.
Coach Leake said, "We are definitely coming around.”
The softball team is scheduled to play Luray at home on Wednesday; at Strasburg at 7 p.m. on April 22; at Central on April 25; and at Page County on April 26.
The RCHS track and field team participated in a meet with Page County and Clarke County last week. The boys earned 43.5 points to Clarke’s 73 and Page’s 42.5. The girls scored 23 points to Clarke’s 53 and Page’s 83.
Jason Settle placed first in the high jump with a height of Jason Waters placed second, jumping 5’6‘.
Mark Jenkins won the mile run with a time of five minutes flat. Jason Waters and Mike Grimsley tied for first in the 3200m run. Nathan Flinchum finished third in the same race.
The team of Mike Grimsley, Jason Grimsley, Jason Waters and Mark Jenkins finished first in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:51.
Willie Shanks finished second in the long jump with a distance of 17’4‘, and Carlos Avelar threw the shotput 40’2‘ to finish second.
Holly Gangel won both the mile and the 3200m runs. Her time for the mile was 6:17 and the 3200m time was 13:48.
