Jon Heddleston will be the guest speaker at the regular quarterly meeting of the Rappahannock Historical Society to be held at the Rappahannock Library, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.
Mr. Heddleston’s topic will be “Itinerant Colonial Preachers.” Circuit riding preachers were used by almost all denominations to reach churches and congregations in the valley and on this side of the mountain. When the preachers arrived in the neighborhood, he would marry, and baptise, as well as have an allday meeting before moving on to the next church, which would be as much as 40 miles away.
Mr. Heddleston’s great-greatgreat-grandfather was just such a preacher in West Virginia. His diary is the basis for Mr. Heddleston’s study. He has researched further into the activities of such preachers.
Captain Howard Holschuh, President of the Historical Society, invites all interested persons to come to the meeting and to participate in the program. There will be time for questions and reminiscences after the program. A social time and refreshments will follow.
