campaign back on track. Though the GOP convention will probably make last year’s contentious gathering look like a Sunday school picnic, North remains in the position of being a heavy favorite.
All sorts of questions can rightfully be raised about party loyalty and a moral obligation to support the nominee, but the plain fact is that many Republican, thousands in fact, vow they’ll never vote for either North or Robb. The state’s senior senator John Warner, a Republican, has said he might back an independent over North if it comes down to that.
State Sen. L. Douglas Wilder has hinted he may seek the senatorial seat as an independent if Robb and North are nominated. Wilder is reportedly backing Goode for the Democratic nominations so his timing would have to be exquisite to run as an independent.
There are rumors that former Secretary of the Navy Jim Webb or former U.S. Attorney Richard Cullen also might consider running as independents if Robb and North are the nominees.
