The Theatre at Washington will present Interact Theatre Company’s production of “Forever Ivor” by Nick Olcott, on May 7 and May 14.
A musical journey though the glamorous career of Ivor Novello, a phenomenon of the British stage'for four decades, “Forever Ivor” takes the audience for a nostalgic ride back to a time when musicals were filled with glorious melodies and plots were drenched in overwhelming romance! The production comes directly from its world premiere performance at The Washington Stage Guild in Washington, D.C.
Ivor Novello was a world-famous composer at 21. A film star at 27. A hit playwright at 31. He was the number one box office attraction of the British stage for twenty years. “Keep the Homes Fire Burning,” the unofficial anthem of the First World War, launched his career. He went on to captivate London’s theatre world with witty and melodic songs that rival Noel Coward’s best efforts. But Ivor easily surpassed all his contemporaries with his lilting, haunting, intoxicating love songs, hailed as the “Rudolph Valentino of Britain,” he was the greatest attraction the West End had ever seen.
“Forever Ivor” is a musical review scripted by Nick Olcott. Twice nominated for a Helen Hayes award for his original work, Olcott delights in getting to know Novello. “Discovering Ivor Novello is like finding a wonderful, and totally unknown restaurant in a city you thought you knew very well,” he explains. “His lush music and clever plays come as a glorious revelation even to those well-acquainted with the theatrical gems of the heyday of musical theatre.”
