Miss McNear recorded top-15 finishes in her first two races this season. She was fifth among all runners at the Georgia State University Invitational Sept. 17 with a time of 21 minutes and four seconds for the 5,000-meter course. The previous week, she placed 12th among all individuals at the University of the South (Tenn.) meet with a time of 20:54 for 5,000 meters. That time placed her 15th in a recent compilation of top times in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Last season, Miss McNear made the all-UAA second team after finishing 11th at the conference meet with a season-best time of 19:34 for 5,000 meters. She followed that up by making the NCAA all-region team with a ninth-place finish at the regional championships. Her time at the NCAA nationals was 19:39, nearly a full minute faster that her time at the 1992 NCAA national championships.
