Fortunately Saddam Hussein had the sense not to believe Oliver North when he said the American military could not fight Iraq in the desert again. Virginians would do well to follow his example.
North and his supporters claim that his actions during ' the Iran-Contra era were those of a patriot. They claim that his steadfastness caused the downfall of a Marxist regime in Nicaragua and brought about the release of American hostages held in Lebanon.
That is not the way we remember those events. The Nicaraguan people voted out the Sandanistas when lack of military support from the United States forced the contras to ; negotiate a cease fire. Even if you believe the Reagan administration was right to find ways to continue military aid to the Contras after Congress voted to cut off such aid, the other part of the equation did not make sense. Perhaps one of two hostages were freed as a result of the arms sales Oliver North negotiated for Iran, but immediately more hostages were seized. By providing arms in exchange, North’s efforts created a market for American hostages.
Col. North’s suggestions for dealing with the national fiscal situation do not make sense. You cannot balance the federal budget by cutting taxes (thus reducing government revenue) and increasing spending on defense. This simply increases government debt.
Marshall Coleman comes from the moderate wing of the Virginia Republican Party centered in the Shenandoah Valley. Since leaving the valley he has wandered all over the ideological landscape. Even if he enjoyed enough support to be a creditable candidate, which he does not, his flip-flops on abortion make us wonder whether there is any “there” there.
We are not optimistic, but we hope voters will give Sen.
