After finding out interesting facts about how Europeans felt about America, one being that 75 percent believed J.R. Ewing of the “Dallas” television show to be a typical American father, the station decided to run a series of spots to educate Europeans about people living in the U.S. today.
The program was entitled “Hands Across the Sea.” Mr. Scott said that researchers travelled around the U.S. visiting homes of all sorts of people. He said that a lot of people visited were proud of their heritage, “but were Americans first.”
The series showed how Czechs and Slovaks came to America and settled on the prairie. Mr. Scott said that they did not get along with each other “way back when” but that they,, learned the spirit of cooperation. The series also included Russian farmers who had settled in the Dakotas, and the Dutch who had settled in Holland, Michigan. The series showed that people were proud of their heritage, and held festivals in remembrance of their ancestry.
