Michael Schloe, son of Peggy and Jerry Schloe, has been deployed to Haiti. He said when they first arrived it was real tough. His officerin-charge, Air Force Captain Teresa Stith, brought Mike and 43 other maintenance people with her from Travis Air Force Base in California. They have been supporting the 436th Tanker Airlift Control Element operating Haiti’s largest airport since operations began there Sept. 19.
Captain Stith said her crew is doing ok, considering the tough living conditions. Four hundred Air Force people live and work in a terminal that has only three latrines and no working showers. Captain Stith said the worst problem has been boredom. She said, “The guys are stuck in this airport with no way to blow off steam. Between shift changes, we hold a gripe session so people can get things off their chest.” Three people have committed suicide.
