After reading the letter from Lois Manookian (Oct. 19), I picked up my own copy of the Republican document she wrote about to see for myself just how “hysterical” it was. All I saw was a sheet of ordinary white paper, printed on both sides, with nothing underlined, no italics, no words printed entirely in capitals, and not an exclamation point in sight. How you can be hysterical in print, on both sides yet, with nothing underlined, no italics, no words printed ENTIRELY in capitals, and not an exclamation point in sight, I SIMPLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND!!!
Excuse me. I didn’t mean to shout.
What I was holding in my hand, and what your are holding now, are simply examples of something more precious than gold and more in peril in this country these days than clean water or the spotted owl.
It’s called free speech.
