“I am sorry. I made a mistake and I’m sorry.”
Those were the words spoken in Rappahannock County Circuit Court last Thursday by James Franklin Butler, 34, of Culpeper, who pleaded guilty to receiving property which had been stolen from David and Helen Smith.
In an indictment dated Jan. 11, 1993, Mr. Butler was charged with a felony, but in a plea agreement entered into with the Commonwealth, the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor. Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke asked Judge W. Shore Robertson to hand down the maximum jail sentence of 12 months to Mr. Butler, and he did. Mr. Luke said that Mr. Butler had a bad record, but with Mr. Butler’s cooperation he had secured the conviction of a co-defendant in the case. I
Judge Robertson granted T.C. Lea’s request to have his client, Mr. Butler, report to the Rappahannock County Jail at 6 p.m. on Nov. 1 to begin serving his sentence.
A motion to reduce bond for Samuel L. Robinson, 25, of Culpeper was denied by Judge Robertson for several reasons.
Mr. Robinson was to be tried in Circuit Court on Aug. 18 and failed to appear. A capias was issued, and he was picked up in North Carglina on a speeding violation on Sept. 4 and returned to Rappahannock County for incarceration.
