Plan ahead: remember that bridges ice up before roadways, and that stalled or stuck vehicles may block the road or shoulders in front of you.. Keep a good interval between you and the car in front of you, and be prepared to change lanes if you see a hazard approaching.
• Skidding: if you feel yourself slipping into a skid, ease off the accelerator and try to keep from locking up your brakes. Steer into the skid to regain control, and then aim the car in the direction you want to go. Get the wheels straight, and proceed carefully.
• Things to bring with you when driving in the winter: bag of sand or cat litter for traction; small snow shovel; ice scraper; jumper cables; blanket; aerosol flat fixer; flashlight and fresh batteries; windshield washer fluid; gloves and hat; first aid kit.
Also handy to have: portable air pump; block of wood (to put under the jack); flares or reflectors; paper towels or rags; waterproof matches; and of course, a spare ice scraper!
