What does a president have to do to get a little credit? For the first time in forty years, American cities are not targeted by nuclear missiles.With at least some help from Clinton, South Africa, the Near East; Northern Ireland, Haiti and North Korea (cross your fingers!) are moving in the right direction. We have not had much success in nation building in Central Africa, but tens of thousands of Somalis and Rwandans are alive today because of our efforts.
The richest 1.2 percent of Americans took a hit on taxes, but 50 million Americans live in the families of working taxpayers who had their taxes cut. The budget deficit has been cut sharply three yers in a row for the first time since Truman was president. As a result, 5.4 million homeowners were able to refinance their mortgages, saving them $10 billion in one year. We are well on the way to cutting the federal payroll by some 262,000 jobs.
More than 3.5 million privatesector jobs have been created. The Family and Medical Leave Act has become law. The largest anti-crime bill in history has been passed, including a ban on assault weapons. The Brady bill passed. The North American Free Trade Act passed, and exports to Mexico are booming.
Nearly one million children will participate in Head Start. World class education standards are being set. 20 million students can use the improved student loan program. National Service lets students earn college tuition help by helping in their communities.
