The first Rappahannock County “partner” family to be approved to have a new home built for them is Barbara Shanks and her family, who live on Piedmont Avenue just outside of Washington. Ms. Shanks has brought up four children in the same house she was raised in. Her two youngest children, Willie, 18, and Jennifer, 20, still live at home with her. Her oldest son Herbert is in the Navy, and daugther Edna will be graduating from Radford University in May. Willie attends RCHS and is studying carpentry and masonry at Piedmont, so he will be helping to build the house.
Ms. Shanks worked at the Aileen plant in Flint Hill for 16 years, and her last day was last month. She is now employed at CCA in Boston.
