your garden lie under a mulch of com stalks or shredded leaves from healthy plants. Be aware that a layer of heavy plant material may become matter and keep the soil cold and wet long enough to delay tilling in spring. Chop the materials finely enough to decai’ during the winter.

Leaves are great for mulching vegetable gardens during the hot summer months. Save leaves in a pile to use next year’s mulch. During winter, a leaf pile becomes compressed and layers form. In spring, just lift off mats of leaves approximately 3 inches thick to mulch around transplants.

Perennials benefit greatly from mulching. During winter, a one-inch layer of chopped plant refuse will help conserve soil moisture, protect root systems from rapid temperature fluctuations, and reduce plant losses caused by the soil heaving up and down. In summer, the mulch conserves soil moisture, keep the root zone cool, and adds nutrientholding organic matter.
