At Ulan Udi, the capital of the Buryat Autonomous Republic, east of Lake Baikal and our first Siberian destination after leaving Mongolia, we visited an opera house, built in 1968 and although closed in June, as are theaters usually, we were assured it is properly employed and filled for all sorts of entertainment most of the time. The seating is arranged in a circle, modified by the stage,' and the latter is so large it would accommodate the most demanding theatrical and operatic productions. In, this far out-back Siberian outpost no one would have anticipated finding so accomplished a theater, and one of our nostalgic guides reminded me that this building was evidence that the old regime was not all bad.
