a sense of conditions in Russia that might help me to understand news from there with new insight. In that respect, but not in others, I fear my trip was disappointing. The view from the train is too fragmentary and confined to make anything I might seem to have learned more than suspect.

A non-Russian speaking person looking out train windows and stopping in cities from time to time is like a deaf-mute trying to communicate through sign language with someone who knows nothing about it.

The overarching impression I had of the Siberian landscape was one of great beauty.
