Pianist Betty Bullock will play two solos, from Moments Musicaux, opus 94, as well as accompany the singers. She won the Austrian Franz Schubert Prize for accompanists and is head of the accompanying staff of the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. She was formerly associate dean of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
The appeal of Schubert is not hard to understand. “Franz Schubert transformed a world of poetry into music,” according to Fischer-Diskau, probably the best known interpreter of Schubert in recent times. As a biography of the composer explains, “One of the reasons for the abiding popularity of Schubert’s songs is simple: whatever other element may or may not be present, the primary essential...an attractive and singable tune, is rarely absent.”
