Mr. Darby said that fund raising needs to begin right away. Businesses can make contributions through the Neighborhood Assistance Program, and that entitles them to a state tax credit. He said that Habitat for Humanity is a (501)(c)(3) non-profit corporation. “I think we have the resources, and plenty of people with homebuilding skills here. We very definitely have a need in this county,” said Mr. Darby. His goal is to raise $35,000 a house.
A second family has also been approved for a new home. They are Dawn and David Fry of Tiger Valley who started a construction project three years ago but Were unable to finish.
A lot of support for Habitat comes from covenant churches. The churches provide prayer, finaincial aid, materials and volunteer hours. Ms. Shanks’ church is the First Baptist Church in Washington.
Ms. Shanks remembers something one of her former teachers, Dorothy Butler, used to say, “Everything works good for one who has faith and believes in the Lord.” Ms. Shanks added, “With the Lord’s help this will be just fine.”
