William Bennett and Lamar Alexander, in a joint letter faxed to senators urging them to reject the bill, said HR-6 “is the kind of pernicious legislation which, if is is enacted, wfil make American education worse, not better,” reported in “World” magazine, Oct. 15.
“World” further wrote that the final bill “doesn’t touch schools that use materials depicting homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle, but ignores hot school reform topics like school choice, vouchers, and charter schools.”
Alice Rivlin, who took over the Office of Management and Budget from Leon Panetta, is opposed to federal financing of schools, “World” further wrote. Ms. Rivlin said the federal government should leave reforms up to the states. (See her 1992
