The right to vote is precious. Unfortunately too many : Americans take it so much for granted they can’t be bothered.
Next week probably once again only about half the registered voters in our nation will bother to vote. Only about one half the people old enough to vote are registered. In a close race this means that only a few more than one-eighth of adults vote for the winner. Yet these winners cast votes that affect the other seven-eighths of the people.
Complaining about government is the national pastime, far in front of baseball and second only to complaining about the weather. We can’t do anything about the weather. Voting is our one big chance to do something about the government.
In Rappahannock County those not happy with their electoral choices have an easy time expressing their displeasure. Write-ins are simple with paper ballots. Those votes count too even if they are unlikely to produce winners.
What if the only people allowed to complain were those who had taken the time to vote?
