As governor of Virginia Chuck Robb streamlined state government, and did not raise taxes. In the senate he has worked tirelessly to reduce the deficit (which is going down), and has been named to the Concord Coalition’s Honor Roll for his deficit reduction work. Ollie North would raise the deficit by his poorly conceived batch of economic proposals.
Ollie North has no experience as the leader of the executive branch or the legislative branch of anything even as small as Rappahannock county. His experience as a bureaucrat in the Reagan administration prepared him only for selling guns to terrorists, and shredding documents. He is not prepared for the task of representing the interests of Virginia in the senate, and Virginia would suffer for it.
When it comes to stands on the issues, there is again no comparison. Ollie North has embraced thfe extreme, while Chuck Robb has always represented the mainstream of Virginia’s thinking. On issue after issue, public education, fiscal responsibility, crime prevention, and civil rights, Ollie North’s positions appeal to a small minority of Virginians. Chuck Robb has fairly represented the rest of Virginia, and has shown that his ideas work. When Ollie North gets free of his handlers, you hear of some of his extreme thinking. His comments on U.S. military readiness didn’t impress Saddam Husseim who retreated when he saw the U.S. forces. His latest comments on social security being optional are also typical. Were he to become senator, there would be six years of this off-the-wall thinking in the senate. Were he to become senator, we would have a six year mistake to regret. '
