The Middle Street Gallery in Washington grossed $11,000 from its second annual art auction held last weekend. i
After paying participating artists their share, printing and postage costs, the auctioneer, and other miscellaneous expenses, the gallery will end up with at least $2,500 in its bank account. The auction is the gallery’s main fund raiser of the year.
According to gallery spokesman Dan Lewis, the money goes to keep the gallery running dining the year (piostly for rent and utihties). He said, “We depend on a fund raising letter in the early part of the year, the auction in the fall, and artists’ sales, for our main support to keep the gallery open. We need the support, and this is important to us.”
Nearly 100 pieces of art, including paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry, handmade baskets, and pottery, were entered in the auction, from about 40 artists. Most of the artists were local, and 20 were members of the gallery. Mr. Lewis said that over 70 percent of the art entered in both the live and silent auctions was sold.
