ien years ago Chuck Robb betrayed himself and his family. He recognized his mistakes, confessed his sins to his wife and close friends, and repented. He has not repeated those mistakes. This is important. This is not a continuing pattern of behavior, but something that happened over a decade ago.
1 Oliver North’s character withers by comparison. Many people are willing to accept and excuse his lying to congress as justified, either because they accept his explanation that lives were at stake, or because they feel that congress doesn’t somehow deserve the truth. But in fact, Ollie North has a pattern of telling lies which started before he began to work for the Reagan administration and still goes on today. It is a dangerous and foolish habit. Dangerous because it indicates a less than complete contact with reality. Foolish because North must surely know that, given his lack of credibility, people are going to check up on anything he says. And yet he continues on. It’s almost as if he cannot stop telling tales.
If a senator is going to effectively represent Virginia in the senate, . other senators must believe that his word is his bond. They must be able to trust that senator. Chuck Robb has recognized that truth, and has never lied even when it would have been to his short term benefit* Ollie North does not recognize that truth, wid because of that, so very many people who have worked with him do .not trust him.
