Rohrer said the campaign also will target those voters now backing Coleman, which include moderate Republicans, military retirees and disaffected independents. “If those votes break away from Coleman, they would break 3 to 1 to Robb,” Rohrer said.

Rozell predicted that Coleman’s support should fade by Election Day, which usually happens to independents. “That’s good news for Chuck Robb,” he said.

No matter what Robb or Coleman do, Robb has been getting some help from North himself. In the past few weeks, North has gone underground and into tightly controlled public events after saying he would make Social Security voluntary and charging that budget cuts made the military ill-prepared for war.

Adding to North’s woes, several Republicans have downplayed North’s military service and charged that he has a penchant for fabricating stories.

North has beten haunted by allegations that he knew some of his gun-running pilots had smuggled cocaine into the United States during the Iran-Contra effort.
