for their support of the bill’s farmland protection provision. U.S. Representatives Sam Farr of California and Wayne Gilchrest of Maryland introduced a farmland protection bill in the House. Sixty congressmen co-sponsored the bill. U.S. Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania introduced a similar measure in the Senate which passed by a 64 to 32 vote. The governors of California, Delaware, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Vermont wrote letters to House Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts supporting the Senate provision.
AFT also applauded the bill’s other conservation provisions, including the authorization of new enrollments in the Conservation Reserve Program, creation of an Environmental Quality incentives Program for crops and livestock, and establishment of a Natural Resources Conservation Foundation and new rural development initiatives. Another provision the group singled out would provide farmers complete planting flexibility, which it said would generate numerous environmental benefits by promoting more diverse cropping patterns and encouraging production on the most productive land.
Mr. Grossi said the farmland protection measure coupled with the bill’s other conservation provisions show conservation is an essential part of farm policy and key to maintaining public financial support of agriculture.
