As speaker after speaker addressed the delegates, it was apparent that every Democrat running in 1996, is running against House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The Contract with America was referred to as “The Contract on America.”
However, they also credited Gingrich with providing the momentum that united the Democratic Party.
In accepting the nomination Mr. Weinberg said the U.S. Constitution is the Contract with America and he read from its preamble. He said that term limits will be an issue in the 10th District race noting that Rep. Wolf said he would seek only six terms in the House when he was first elected and is now running for his ninth twoyear term.
“Frank Wolf has been there too long,” the candidate said. “He is a decent individual who conscientiously believes in what he votes for. The difference is in what, he votes for. His voting record is not what the 10th District wants.”
He particularly faulted Rep. Wolf for supporting Gingrich for the Republican leadership and he blamed Speaker Gingrich’s leadership for the government shut down.
Mr. Weinberg noted that estimates show the Washington metropolitan area had lost $3 billion dollars because of the shut down, not just in lower spending by government workers. Contractors who do business with the government were hurt and may not recover, he said. “We cannot tolerate that kind of Contract with America.”
He said there is a simple choice “Wolf or Weinberg; Gingrich or Gephardt. I think our district will vote for Gephardt.”
He added, “Every individual can make a difference. You are all members nf the Weinbere for Coneress campaign.”
