Look for Morels (In Rappahannock they are called merkles) through the month of May. If the mushroom hunter already knows where this splendid fungus has been found in the past, there is no need to look.
They’11 be there if temperature and warm rain have been in the right combination and quantity. Who knows the secret of this formula? I, for one, do not. All I know is that a dry April usually results in fewer morels.
I also know that in some springs there are not morels at all while and that, inexplicitly, some years produce morels big enough to split and stuff with chopped chicken, onion and celery to be baked in a bit of chicken stock and butter with results that reduce my command of the English language to an inadequate state.
