Merit Attacks
To the Editor:
A letter to the editor two weeks ago made me wonder whether the letter-writer and I were living in the same county and were familiar with the same schools.
Ronald L. Frazier, who represents the Jackson District on the Board of Supervisors, raised the specter of socialism taking over our schools and gynecological exams on sixth-grade girls.
He also linked the conduct of Ron Makela, a conscientious member of the school board, to the ignorance of people who read condensed versions of Nazi Germany’s role in World War II.
This is inflammatory talk.
To see whether there were compelling reasons for Mr. Frazier’s wild words, I spent much of Mother’s Day reading an unabridged version of the Goals 2000 program to which Mr. Frazier referred.
I could And nothing that substantiated his fears. I couldn’t even find the word “condom,” though Mr. Frazier put “condom distribution” in quotes as if the words came from the Goals 2000 proposal.
An earlier letter to the editor by Walter Longyear on Goals 2000 argued that “having the federal government tax us in order to give money back doesn’t make much sense.” I found this argument persuasive until I considered that the federal government is able to tax income; county governments must rely on property taxes.
