The Cabernet Franc vines at Brenda and Jim Welch’s five acre vineyard in Viewtown was hit the hardest, but she thinks that their Chardonnay willbe all right. Mrs. Welch said that the Cabernet Franc vines grow in a lower area than the Chardonnay. She noted that leaves and clusters were damaged; they shrivel up and die, she said.
Last year was the Welch’s first crop as their vineyard is just four years old. Despite some frost damage, Mrs. Welch believes that Rappahannock County is an excellent place for growing grapes. She said that site location makes a big difference in how the vines survive through bad weather.
Three vineyard owners reported that they don’t believe they had any measurable damage from the frost.
