For Retirees Del. Jay Katzen, R-31st District, recently announced that Gov. Allen has signed House Bill 292 which provides a final opportunity for federal ■ retirees to accept the - Commomwealth’s offer for settle’ ment. This legislation provides any retiree who did not participate in the " original or supplement settlement pro" grams one final chance to receive a settlement payment. This payment is equal to 76.5 percent of the amount of , the original overpayment of tax on federal retirement income for the peri_ od 1985-1988. , The settlement programs were , created in response to the ongoing litv igation in Harper versus Virginia Department of Taxation, a case which was decided finally by the Virginia . Supreme Court in favor of the retirees • in September 1995. In order to participate in this'program, retirees must notify the Department of Taxation of !’ their intent no later than June 10, ; 1996. ; , * * If you are a federal retiree who has contacted the Department of Taxation previously, you have met . the notification requirement. “If you are unsure whether you have been included, please feel free to contact my office.
