A resolution of intent from the board to the governor, requesting USDA designation and assistance for crop damage in the county due to the drought, was approved and will be drafted and sent.
• The board discussed the increased need for office space for some county offices and will begin planning as to how to better utilize the space available.
• Richard Smith and Carson Johnson were approved for new terms on the Water & Sewer Authority. Aaron Roberts was reappointed to the Social Services Board. The board will seek to find a replacement for Cheryl Fairbrother who resigned from the Recreational Facilities Authority.
• The board noted the generous donation to the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association by Faith Mountain Company. The donation, $2,500, was made from profits of the sale of “volunteer sun catchers.” The company features a special product each catalog season and a portion of the proceeds are donated to a non-profit organization m the county.
• Delegate Jay Katzen answered questions from the board regarding the proposal on personal property tax by Jim Gilmore. The board, always concerned with tax rates in the county, said two things have contributed to the rising tax rate here: the cut in state funding for schools and the rash of unfunded mandates by the state.
The county’s budget, minus the school budget, comes from the personal property tax. Katzen said that money would be returned dollar for dollar but the board remained unconvinced. They said down the line if the county needs more money they doubt if Richmond will give it and that would mean raising real estate taxes.
