The Blue Ridge Orchestra chose “Master Peter’s Puppet Show” because the music and poetry are accessible to many ages. Also, the story readily lends itself to staging in schools because of the small size of the setting and the small number of characters.
A puppet show is contained within the production featuring knights, kings and ladies, enhancing the operettas appeal to elementary age children. Through this performance, Blue Ridge members hope to introduce this age group to “the full power of musical experience" and perhaps spark some interest in playing orchestral music.
RCES fourth grade teacher Amy Saxton said, “I think this is fantastic! Many children, especially in rural areas, have never heard this type of music before. We are really looking forward to going.”
For the past two years the Blue Ridge Community Orchestra has specifically sought to “heighten awareness of and participation in music in our area.” Among their initiatives, the BRCO has established a junior orchestra in Madison open to all student musicians at the beginning stages of instrumental study.
