In Rappahannock County Circuit Court last week, Denise Anastasia Hawkins pleaded guilty to her third DUI offense in five years and to a felony charge of driving a motor vehicle after having been declared a habitual offender.
Hawkins spoke to the court concerning her rehabilitation efforts and her remorse over the offense.
Letters to the court attested to her good character and the improvement and change in her behavior since the offense occurred.
Hawkins said she is, and has been attending Alcoholics Anonymous and that the organization has helped her tremendously.
Hawkins told Judge Shore Robertson that she understood the charges and waved her rights. She was sentenced to 12 months in jail for the felony charge and 12 months with 11 suspended for the misdemeanor charge of DUI. The sentences will run concurrent.
