House Finches are always with us. The male House Finch has his brickish-red color more confined to his head and upper breast. Distinguishing between the two species of finches takes careful observation and a sharp, discerning eye. It’s the kind of intellectual challenge that makes bird watching so rewarding.
There is also a possibility that a wanderipg block of robust and noisy Evening Grosbeaks will visit the bird feeder. There is never a problem in identifying this robinsized bird. Brilliant yellow, jet black and white define the males. The elegant female has a more dusky look to her. The world “grosbeak” fits them well; the bill is big. We had friends who called Goldfinches “minibeaks” for they are much smaller but do have the same combination of colors in their plumage.
Autumn at the bird feeder can be full of surprises. Be on the lookout for other migrants or, more accurately, winter visitors, such as the tame Redbreasted Nuthatch, a much smaller bird than the familiar White-breasted Nuthatch which is a resident, non migratory species.
A Red-breasted Nuthatch will come for suet or bird pudding. Pine Siskins are the size of Goldfinches and act like these familiar thistle lovers. Goldfinches are now greenisholive in their non-breeding
