Amissville enjoys the largest contingent of volunteers with more than 30 active and 10 auxiliary members. In addition to responding to 6070 fire and rescue calls a month, volunteers organize fund drives, work weekly at bingo games, dances, and dinners, run auctions, provide and attend training sessions, repair and maintain equipment, handle reams of paperwork, and serve as mentors and advisors to the Explorers and other younger members.
All the fire and rescue squads in the county are experiencing the same problems as Amissville and Washington.
“We’re trying to recruit a wide variety of people,” said Carter. “We need retirees and people who work shiftwork, to help cover during the day, and young people, like the g Explorers, who can get involved and be trained to be the leaders of tomorrow.”
