operetta is a story-within-astory in which a wandering entertainer, Master Peter, presents a puppet show to a small audience at an inn. In the puppet show, King Charlemagne orders one of his knights, Don Gayferos, to rescue his lady from a tower where she is held by a Moor.
Gayferos succeeds and brings the king’s wife to safety with the aid of his companion, Sir Roland. Through his commentary on the deeds of the puppets in the show, Cervantes’ colorful character Don Quixote, who mistakenly believes he is a knight-errant from the Age of Chivalry, reveals his own heartfelt feelings about love and heroism.
BRCO mentor players and at least two developing youth musicians will comprise the orchestra. Dr. Anne Kish, artistic director, will conduct. The stage director, David Ostwald, works on both coasts and has directed opera at Wolf TVap, in Hamburg, Brussels and New York, as well as for the San Francisco Opera Company. Kish and Ostwald produced this opera together in France for the summer festival of the Company of Orpheus.
