Toward the end of her time there her daughter, Jessica, became very ill and was diagnosed with leukemia. The family relocated to the Washington, D.C. area to be close to Georgetown University Lombardi Center. Waites said she will always remember the kindness and generosity of people in Rappahannock during what she calls their dark period.
While there, Waites had a life-threatening encounter of her own. She left work at the hospital and was headed to her car in the parking lot when a man accosted her and thrust a pistol under her nose.
Waites believes he was on drugs due to his behavior. He told her he was going to kill her. She pleaded with him not to and said a myriad of thoughts flew through her mind. She thought about her daughter, of all the things she hadn’t done yet that she wanted to do and she thought if she survived she’d move back to the safety of Rappahannock.
The man pulled the trigger.
