PERCHANCE TO DREAM Perhaps the closest we can come to a clear understanding of death is through closer scrutiny of sleep and dreaming. Both sleep and death involve a flight of the unconscious from the body, while dreaming may offer some insight as to what we might expect to encounter after having done so. Consider the words of Rollo May in "Man's Search for Himself', "All through the ages...people have regarded their dreams as sources of wisdom, guidance and insight. But most of us today think of our dreams as odd episodes, as foreign as some strange ceremonial dance in Tibet. This results in the cutting off of an exceedingly great and significant portion of the self. We are no longer able to use much of the wisdom and power of the unconscious."
Dreams can bring comfort or worry, but they can also serve as guides as to what concerns us and therefore what might need attention. We can learn from our dreams, whether they are waking ones in which we plan the future or night visitors which tell us what needs attention.
