Since that false spring in January, the Virginia Piedmont has experienced snow and an ice storm Robins are still around, however. I have heard that curious and distinctive one-note call they give at the end of the day, just when it is getting dark. I suppose they are finding plenty to eat; we did have a good berry crop this year.
My interest reverts to earthworms. I find that Charles Darwin found these creatures of great interest. In his opinion the lowly earthworm may have played a more important role on this planet than any other animal! According to Darwin, one acre of moist earth may contain 50,000 earthworms. In one year these night crawlers bring 18 tons of soil to the surface; and in 20 years build a new three-inch layer of soil rich in decomposed organic nutrients.
So Homo sapiens benefit from the earthworm indirectly while the robin benefits directly with a good wholesome meal. With all those earthworms in just one acre, a few
