The Department of Forestry urges landowners to develop a Preharvest Plan before cutting timber. Such a plan was developed for the property to address the implementation of Best Management Practices such as log deck locations, skid trail layout, stream crossings with portable bridges, seeding bare soil areas, and prompt reforestation where pine management is the objective.
Through thoughtful planning, only two crossings on intermittent streams are to be made on the entire harvest. Both crossings are to be made with a portable bridge.
The Department of Forestry has a strong water quality program. The department makes periodic inspections of ongoing harvest operations. It works with landowners and the forest industry to address implementing Best Management Practices. It also enforces Virginia’s water quality laws that pertain to the practice of silviculture.
A regeneration cut (total harvest) does not automatically insure significant amounts of erosion will occur. As with any timber harvest, most erosion is associated with the skid trails and haul roads that are created. Since a regeneration cut involves removing all the timber, skidding is dispersed over the entire tract. This often means fewer concentrated skid trails than found in a partial harvest.
