An important part of forest management concerns the practice of silviculture. Silviculture can be defined as the practice of controlling forest establishment, species composition, and growth. Silviculture is usually directed at creating and maintaining the kind of forest that best meets the objectives of the landowner. The silvicultural tools available to the forester include the various harvest methods, herbicides, reforestation, and prescribed burning.
Landowner objectives are extremely varied. Various objectives include wildlife management, timber production, aesthetics, recreation, soil and water conservation, or a combination of all. This mosaic of landowner objectives across the landscape inherently lends itself very well to a concept known as “ecosystem management.”
“Ecosystem management” is an environmental buzzword that refers to considering the entire landscape in making forest management decisions and not just one individual property. This mosaic of objectives can provide for a wide variety of forest types, age classes, and wildlife habitats across the landscape.
