Town planner Milton Herd met Monday night with about 40 town and county residents in the second of two visioning sessions to define the town’s future. Herd was hired last year by the town council to provide assistance in meeting the town’s statutory requirement to review and update its Comprehensive Plan every five years. Mayor Stew Willis said that, though the Town Planning Commission was actually responsible for making recommendations to the council, members of the council wanted citizen input in developing the long-range plan.
In the first session, held March 4, Herd explained the strategic planning process and set up four workgroups. Group leaders presented their teams’ views of what the ideal Town of Washington would be in the next 20 years. Many of the items listed by the workgroups were identical to popular survey responses collected by * Herd last summer and again in December 1997 when the planning process began to take shape.
At Monday’s meeting, Herd distributed a draft vision statement he compiled from revised and consolidated versions of the teams’ recommendations. Seven key paragraphs covering small town character, country setting, tourist economy, wastewater management and other familiar items were posted on a wall and discussed by the group.
Herd modified some of the paragraphs to more accurately reflect the group’s interpretation of specific ideas. Copies of the draft vision statement are available from Kaye Kohler.
