a law enacted by the Congress would have clearly been an impeachable offense, if proved, yet a Democratic Congress did not act. Why? President Reagan’s popularity was overwhelming, and it would have been intolerably divisive had they done so.
Similarly, in President Clinton’s case, recent polls have consistently shown that more than 60 percent of the people approve of his conduct of the office of president, despite the as yet unproven allegations of personal misbehavior. To urge the start of impeachment proceedings at this junction would be equally divisive and unwise.
Piranhas on both sides of these events are now engaged in partisan feeding frenzy. The media, too, are complicit. The hatreds that have given rise to this frenzy are themselves shameful. In the face of these alarums and excursions, patience and restraint would seem to be in order.
